Voil un mlodrame que jai fait, le dernier de plusieurs mlodrames anglais qui ont Lagardre pour hros. Des mots remplacent laction, des mots remplacent le dcor, les costumes, et les accessoires; mais enfin ce pastiche nest quune pice et non un roman. Je lai fait pour Lewis Waller, acteur romantique sil en fut, et grandement dou des qualits qui appartiennent par tradition Lagardre. Jai su, il y a longtemps, grce M. Jules Claretie, que vous tiez le vrai createur de ce paladin, Lagardre, pair de dArtagnan, pair de Cyrano, pair presque de Roland et dOlivier. Et si je ne lavais pas su, jaurais pu lapprendre dernirement en lisant ce livre aussi plein de charme que drudition, "Les Anciens Thtres de Paris" de M. Georges Cain. Mais je crois que cette vrit est connue de peu de monde dans les pays o se parle la langue anglaise, que quand on loue "Le Bossu" de Fval on doit aussi louer "Le Bossu" de Sardou.
