About the Author
Reinaldo Arenas nació en Holguín (Cuba), en 1943. Hijo de una familia de campesinos, se adhirió al principio a la revolución castrista, pero su rebeldía contra todo dogmatismo no tardó en convertirlo en un «peligro social». Tras unas penosas vicisitudes, que narró en su memorable autobiografía Antes que anochezca (Andanzas 165 y Fábula 55), traducida a 16 lenguas, llevada al cine por Julian Schnabel y protagonizada por Javier Bardem, Arenas escapó de Cuba y se instaló en Nueva York, donde, enfermo de sida, se suicidó en 1990. Tusquets Editores ha publicado su célebre «pentagonía», integrada por los títulos Celestino antes del alba, El palacio de las blanquísimas mofetas, Otra vez el mar, El color del verano y El asalto (Andanzas 395, 428, 463, 357 y 497), y las novelas El mundo alucinante (Andanzas 314 y Fábula 177) y El portero (Andanzas 526 y Fábula 260). En el presente volumen, compuesto por relatos fechados entre 1964 y 1982, la telúrica imaginación del escritor cubano pone ante el lector un mundo de opresión, de sensualidad desbocada y recelos, de soledad y traiciones, un mundo donde sólo el arte y la literatura parecen aportar alguna luz.
