Depuis que Schiller est mort, et que Gthe ne compose plus pour le thtre, le premier des crivains dramatiques de lAllemagne, cest Werner: personne na su mieux que lui rpandre sur les tragdies le charme et la dignit de la posie lyrique, nanmoins ce qui le rend si admirable comme pote nuit ses succs sur la scne. Ses pices, dune rare beaut, si lon y cherche seulement des chants, des odes, des penses religieuses et philosophiques, sont extrmement attaquables quand on les juge comme des drames qui peuvent tre reprsents. Ce nest pas que Werner nait du talent pour le thtre, et quil nen connaisse mme les effets beaucoup mieux que la plupart des crivains allemands; mais on dirait quil veut propager un systme mystique de religion et damour, laide de lart dramatique, et que ses tragdies sont le moyen dont il se sert, plutt que le but quil se propose. Luther, quoique compos toujours avec cette intention secrte, a eu le plus grand succs sur le thtre de Berlin. La rformation est un vnement dune haute importance pour le monde, et particulirement pour lAllemagne, qui en a t le berceau.
