Sie stammen aus der vorislamischen Zeit und reichen bis ins Hochmittelalter hinein. In den altesten Zeugnissen lasst sich noch die Vorstellung von der Magie des Fluches beobachten: Das einmal ausgesprochene Wort wirkt aus eigener Kraft und stiftet tatsachlich Schaden. In Prosatexten begegnet man konventionellen Fluchformeln.
