Ghetto: Sanctuary for Sale

This book is part of the European Cultural Center's exhibition at the European Cultural Center at Palazzo Mora during the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale. GHETTO is a theoretical project which proposes wealth transfer from American tourists to Iranian refugees seeking shelter and fundamental human needs, with the intention of creating inclusive cities where all feel welcome.

In collaboration with the UNHCR, HPA proposes GHETTO: Sanctuary for Sale which includes within it a twofold narrative and architectural manifesto while positing the question, "What does it mean to be a citizen?" Two graphic novel narratives, written from both the perspective of the tourist and the refugee, describe how each individual may become a citizen of the collective world community. The book illustrates how the innovative timeshare-refugee housing model inherently supports the potential to change the world view to encourage inclusivity. Demonstrating the studio's credo in this theoretical project, Henriquez Partners Architects aims to elicit meaningful discussions concerning models of architectural practice that enable diverse cultural landscapes to thrive and promote social good on the tiny planet we call home.

Henriquez, Gregory: - Gregory Henriquez is the Managing Principal of Henriquez Partners Architects and a leader amongst a generation of architects who are reintegrating ethics and activism into the discipline. His work is founded on the belief that meaningful architecture must be a poetic expression of social justice. In 2019, Gregory Henriquez was named a UNHCR Canada's Premier Advocate for its #withrefugees campaign and is working with the UNHCR to bring awareness to the plight of refugees. GHETTO: Sanctuary for Sale is the fourth book in a series that examines the meaningful issues faced by contemporary architects, following Towards an Ethical Architecture, Body Heat: The Story of the Woodward's Redevelopment, and Citizen City.Schlegelmilch, Sarah: - Sarah Schlegelmilch received her Bachelor of Science in Design from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She completed her Master of Architecture at McGill University and finished her thesis on pataphysics with Alberto Pérez-Gómez. She has practiced professionally at Steven Ginn Architects in Nebraska and at Steven Holl Architects in New York City and is currently working at Henriquez Partners Architects.Tewfik, Patricia: - Patricia Tewfik is a Principal at Henriquez Partners Architects who stewards its strategy, business development, and social impact goals. She has an International Relations background, specializing in Peace, Security, Economics and Development. Prior to joining Henriquez, Patricia's experience includes advising executives on strategy and growth, working in developing countries for Deloitte's Consulting practice, as well as collaborations with the World Bank and McKinsey for special engagements. She supports various not-for-profit organizations and has been invited to participate in the UNHCR's first all Women Leadership Forum. Patricia holds a Master of Public Administration from the University of Victoria, is a Certified Professional Accountant and holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from the University of British Columbia.
