About the Author
John Spranger, John came to medical device sales from a previous career in clinical work. He was an accomplished Physician Assistant, working in neurosurgery, as well as deformity and complex orthopedic spine surgery. An expert in consultative selling, John quickly distinguished himself as a leader in medical device sales. He is currently Specialty Sales Director for Depuy Synthes Spine, a Johnson & Johnson company. He works closely with his team of managers to sell, inspire and teach the sales force. His mission is to improve their sales acumen clinically, technically, and deftly. John was raised in a small Wisconsin town. He currently resides in Denver with his wife and two young daughters. An avid outdoor sports enthusiast, John loves mountain biking, skiing, cycling, and hiking. He is a three-time ironman finisher, as well as an instrument-rated pilot. Ray Oktavec, Ray is currently Director of the Surgical Innovation Team at DePuy Synthes Spine, a Johnson and Johnson company. As top performer in a variety of sales positions, Ray leads by example. He sets high expectations for his team and always has a plan with goals he can measure throughout the sales process. His responsibilities include training sales representatives and surgeons, as well as providing solutions for complex and minimally invasive spinal procedures. Ray also recently received a U.S. patent for one of his inventions to facilitate minimally invasive spine surgery. In the past Ray has worked for other companies, such as Abbott Laboratories and Nuvasive Spine. Whether he's with a young start-up or a Fortune 100 company, Ray knows the principles of the sale remain the same. Ray has been a leader all his life. He was a captain on the football field at Mississippi College, where he lettered for four years. Ray is also active in his community. From 2004 to 2015, he served with the Associated Marine Institute (AMI Kids), Greater Ft. Lauderdale, a non-profit in Broward County, where he was Chairman of the Board for two years. Ray loves to attend professional sporting events around the country. He is a fan of all things outdoors, including big-game hunting, fishing, and snowboarding. Ray's energy can best be described with a single word: passion. This quality permeates everything he does and drives him to fulfill his potential to the utmost.
