(Indogermanistik), Marburg (Keltologie), Saarbrücken (Skandinavistik). 1969 Habilitation für «Altgermanistik»; ab 1.1.1972 Ordinarius für Ältere deutsche Sprache und Literatur am Institut für Germanistik (Universität Wien); begründet das Studium der Nederlandistik an der Universität Wien. 1997 Habilitation für Keltologie; begründet das Studium der Keltologie an der Universität Wien. Mehrfach ausgezeichnetes Wirkliches Mitglied der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften.
