Augusto P rez, un joven rico y profesional. Es hijo nico y cuando su madre viuda fallece, Augusto no sabe qu hacer con su vida. Por casualidad conoce a una pianista, Eugenia Domingo del Arco, y comienza a cortejarla, pero Eugenia lo rechaza porque ya tiene novio. Augusto entabla una amistad con Rosario, una de las sirvientas de Eugenia, y comienza a cuestionar el sexo femenino y se pregunta si las mujeres tienen alma y si se puede confiar en ellas. Como experimento, Augusto le pide a Eugenia que se case con l para ver c mo responder a. Eugenia, quien en ese momento se hab a peleado con su novio Mauricio, decide aceptar su propuesta de matrimonio. Sin embargo, poco antes de la boda Augusto recibe una carta de Eugenia en que ella le dice que ha decidido no casarse con l y que se va a ir a las provincias con Mauricio a vivir de un trabajo que Augusto le hab a conseguido. Tras recibir esta noticia, Augusto contempla el suicidio. Pero antes, decide ir a Salamanca a ver a Don Miguel de Unamuno. En su visita, el escritor le dice a Augusto que no existe, que s lo es un personaje de ficci n en su libro y que est destinado a morirse, no a suicidarse. Augusto discute con Don Miguel--quien juega el papel de Dios en la vida del personaje como autor del libro--y le suplica que no lo mate. Augusto vuelve a su casa muy confundido y all se muere al lado de su perro Orfeo. No se sabe si Augusto se mat o si Don Miguel lo mat . V ctor dice en el pr logo que Augusto se suicid . Unamuno dice en el post-pr logo que l decret la muerte de Augusto.
