V. 1698 Lfving'in is, joka oli konstaapeli tykkivess, muutettiin Kkisalmen linnaan, ja poika seurasi ja tuli niinmuodoin nykyisen Suomenmaan alaan. Suuret nlkvuodet olivat skettin maassamme surmanneet seitsemnnen osan asukkaista. Kaarlo XI oli kuollut. Nuori lapsimainen Kaarlo XII oli noussut hallitus-istuimelle, ja kaikki Ruotsin vallan naapurit alkoivat neuvoja laskea, mitenk voisivat riist itsellens kappaleita nuoren hallitsijan kuninkaallisesta viitasta. Tsaari Venjll tahtoi Inkerinmaan, varsinkin Nevajoen rmeet, ja niin paljon Suomenniemest kuin sodan onnetar saattaisi hnelle suoda. Puolan kuningas kosi Liivin tasangoita ja Vinjoen viljavia rantoja.
