The Lakeland Terrier is a breed of dog that originates from the Lake District in England, hence the breed's name. The Lakeland Terrier is a small-to-medium sized breed and is a member of the Terrier family. The Lakeland Terrier is considered to be the most hypoallergenic breed of Terrier. The Lakeland Terrier was first registered in the United Kingdom in 1921. The breed was developed to be able to hunt foxes while traversing the mountainous and rocky terrain of the Lake District. Due to the terrain being unsuitable for horseback hunting, the Lakeland Terrier would work closely with hunters and is therefore a highly trainable breed. The Lakeland Terrier is incredibly energetic and has a great amount of stamina. It is believed that the breed's athleticism is due to the fact that the Lakeland Terrier would have to run all day during hunts, whereas its close cousin, the Fox Terrier, would normally have been carried in a saddle bag until it was needed. The Lakeland Terrier was also used throughout the United Kingdom to exterminate 'vermin' on farmland. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Lakeland Terrier. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Lakeland Terrier with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the Lakeland Terrier is a highly energetic, confident and friendly breed. It is highly atypical for a Lakeland Terrier to show signs of shyness or aggression, which makes it a very popular household companion breed. The breed is also known to be highly intelligent and independently minded. It is not uncommon for a Lakeland Terrier to exhibit 'selective deafness' if they are particularly interested in something. It is important to note that as a working breed, the Lakeland Terrier has a high amount of energy which needs to be expended. If the Lakeland Terrier has a buildup of energy it is likely to develop destructive behaviors due to boredom or hyperactivity.
