What are the War of 1812 Facts? The war started when British troops invaded America and set fire to the White House in Washington, D.C. Americans also burned down the Washington Navy Yard and the Executive Mansion to prevent the British from capturing them. The British held the city for 26 hours. The next day, a tornado struck the city, which resulted in the destruction of the buildings and the deaths of many British soldiers. After the battle, the Americans finally got their city back, but not before a British invasion occurred. The conflict began over issues of maritime practice and manifest destiny. The British supported native American tribes in the Northwest Territory. The United States, on the other hand, was engaged in a lucrative re-importation trade with its Caribbean colonies. As a result, the British imposed trade restrictions on neutral countries, which the Americans regarded as violation of international trade law. Moreover, the British were actively seizing American ships and sailors, and were even forcing American soldiers to serve in the royal navy. The War of 1812 was the first war to take place in North America. The British were backed by the Royal Navy. The North American squadron was based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and consisted of seven frigates, nine sloops, and brigs. They also occupied Washington, D.C., where the British burned the White House. As the British continued their invasion, the American government became increasingly frustrated, and the War of 1812 ended in victory for the British.
