A Guide to Apply a Model-based Systems Engineering Approach with SysML to Specify and Architect Systems.

This book provides a straightforward guide to develop an architecture model of a Small Satellite using the Systems Modeling Language (SysML(R)). SysML is a general-purpose modeling language used to specify and architect systems. Model-based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is intended to produce an integrated system model using SysML which reflects multiple views of the system to specify the interaction and interconnection of its components, and their functions, states, interfaces, and performance and physical characteristics. The system model can enhance quality, reuse, and shared understanding of the system.

This book can be used by instructors and students to learn how to apply MBSE with SysML, as well as practitioners of MBSE and organizations as a reference approach for their application.

About the Author
Sanford Friedenthal is an industry leader in model-based systems engineering (MBSE) and an independent consultant. In his previous position as a Lockheed Martin Fellow, he led the corporate engineering effort to enable Model-Based Systems Development (MBSD) and other advanced practices. In this capacity, he was responsible for developing and implementing strategies to institutionalize the practice of MBSD across the company and providing direct model-based systems engineering support to multiple programs.

He also was a leader of the industry team that developed SysML from its inception through its adoption by the OMG. Mr. Friedenthal also led the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) MBSE Initiative, and is co-author of 'A Practical Guide to SysML'.

Christopher Oster is a Systems and Software Architect at Lockheed Martin Space Systems and an industry recognized expert in Systems Engineering and model-integration. Currently, Mr. Oster leads efforts related to next generation command and control systems and data analytics efforts. In his prior role, Mr. Oster was the Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Model-based Enterprise lead where he was responsible for ensuring the successful transition of Lockheed Martin Space portfolio to a model-based engineering methodology.

Mr. Oster's experience has focused on developing large scale, software intensive systems including data processing suites, spacecraft command and control systems and space platforms. At Lockheed Martin since 2004, Mr. Oster has held roles in software development, systems engineering, architecture, business development and R&D, and is a graduate of Lockheed Martin's Advanced Technical Leadership Development program. Mr. Oster is also an active member of the systems engineering and model-based communities, as a frequent contributor to the INCOSE MBSE initiative, a member of the INCOSE Systems 2025 Vision project and frequently lectures at universities, industry conferences and government offices about model-based systems engineering.
