El internet, an embrionario en 1971, despega verdaderamente en 1974, tras la creacin de protocolos por Vinton Cerf y Robert Khan para los intercambios de datos. En el sitio de la Internet Society (ISOC), que funda en 1992 para promover el desarrollo del internet, Vinton Cerf explica: "La red permite dos cosas (): como los libros, permite acumular conocimientos. Pero sobre todo presenta este conocimiento bajo una forma que lo relaciona con otra informacin. Mientras que en un libro la informacin queda aislada." El primer sistema de codificacin informtica es el ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange - Cdigo Estadounidense Estndar para el Intercambio de Informacin), publicado en 1968 por ANSI (American National Standards Institute - Instituto Estadounidense Nacional de Normas), y actualizado en 1977 y 1986. El ASCII es un cdigo de 128 caracteres traducidos en lenguaje binario en siete bits (A se traduce por "1000001", B se traduce por "1000010", etc.).
