Les poemes politiques et de circonstance, temoignages capitaux pour l'histoire de cette periode, seront publies dans les tomes Il a IV. Mais Claudien aecrit aussi la derniere epopee mythologique de l'Antiquite latine, Le Rapt de Proserpine. L'enlevement de Persephone (Core, Proserpine) par Hades (Pluton) et sa recherche eperdue par sa mere Demeter (Ceres) est un des plus grands mythes de l'Antiquite (le theme est traite deja dans l'Hymne homerique a Demeter (VIIe siecle av. I.-C.). Belle histoire, s'il en fut, que celle de cette pure jeune fille qui s'est laisse seduire par la beaute: les fleurs et deviendra un jour la Reine des Enfers. Claudien donne une lecture cosmique: lu mythe.Jean-Louis Charlet est professeur de litterature latine tardive, medievale et humaniste a l'Universite de Provence; il dirige le centre de recherche N. Poete epique (le Rapt de Proserpine), il fut le dernier chantre de la grandeur romaine (panegyriques epiques et invectives: la geste de Rome de 395 a 404). Il a aussi laisse divers poemes epidictiques, epigrammatiques ou de circonstances, dont certains inacheves.
