Fifty Sounds: A Memoir of Language, Learning, and Longing

"The language learning I want to talk about is sensory bombardment. Japanese, Barton learned, has three scripts: the phonetic katakana and hiragana (collectively known as kana) and kanji (characters of Chinese origin).
