Cuando sali luz este poema sobre la conquista del Rio de la Plata, las musas castellanas habian desplegado, en las obras de Garcilaso, Herrera y Luis de Leon, un estilo culto y elegante. Ni la lucha intestina de Fernando el Catlico contra los Moros, ni las guerras exteriores de su sucesor Carlos V, fueron bastantes detener los progresos de las letras, que sin proteccion y estmulo florecieron en el reinado sombro inquisitorial de Felipe II. El gusto de la literatura italiana, que mediados del siglo XVI. se habia generalizado en Espaa, y el verso endecasilabo, introducido por Boscan, pusieron en voga los grandes modelos que se ilustraron en la epopeya, y Ariosto, Camoens, y Taso, tuvieron sus mulos imitadores. Mientras que Zapata, Urrea y Samper celebraban porfia las glorias de Carlos V, Pinciano escribia el Pelayo; Cueva, la Conquista de la Btica; Hojeda, la Cristiada; Mosquera y Zamora, la Numantina y la Saguntina; y el frtil inagotable Lope de Vega, la Dragontea, el Isidro y la Jerusalen.
