Berlioz tait revenu de Rome depuis deux ans. Il tait dj presque clbre: il avait fait excuter l'ouverture du Roi Lear, l'ouverture des Francs Juges, la Symphonie fantastique et la Symphonie d'Harold. Mais il tait pauvre. Son mariage avec Henriette Smithson avait encore augment sa gne. Les articles qu'il donnait quelques revues (Europe littraire, Revue europenne, Monde dramatique, Correspondant, Gazette musicale), lui taient mdiocrement pays. Il ne savait plus quel saint se vouer; c'est lui-mme qui nous l'a cont. Un jour de dtresse, il rdigea une courte nouvelle intitule Rubini Calais et la fit paratre dans la Gazette musicale. Le 10 octobre 1834, ce petit rcit fut reproduit dans le Journal des Dbats, prcd d'une note o l'on vantait la verve et l'esprit du conteur. Berlioz se rendit rue des Prtres-Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois afin de remercier Bertin l'an. Ce dernier lui proposa, sance tenante, d'crire dans les Dbats des chroniques sur la musique. Castil-Blaze venait de quitter le journal. Delcluse y conservait la critique des reprsentations du Thtre Italien; il ne l'abandonna jamais Berlioz qui, vraisemblablement, jamais ne la rclama. Jules Janin continuait de s'occuper de l'Opra et de l'Opra-Comique. Le domaine du nouveau feuilletoniste tait donc assez troit. On lui laissait les concerts et les varits musicales.
