Ds le VIIIe sicle, tandis que les marins des autres pays n'osaient quitter le voisinage des ctes, eux se lanaient dj bravement en pleine mer et dcouvraient l'Islande, puis le Grnland. Autour de ces terres ils rencontrrent des banquises et apprirent bientt connatre leurs dangers. Un document du XIIIe sicle, le Kongespeil (le Miroir des Rois), renferme une description trs exacte de ces nappes cristallines, absolument remarquable pour cette poque, o les phnomnes naturels n'taient gure observs. Aux Normands succdrent, quelques sicles plus tard, dans la lutte contre les glaces, les Anglais, puis les Hollandais. Croyant l'existence d'une mer libre au nord des continents, les navigateurs de l'Europe septentrionale cherchrent longtemps dans cette direction un passage conduisant aux Indes et en Chine. Partout ils trouvrent la route ferme, mais, loin d'tre dcourags par ces insuccs, ils n'en persistrent pas moins pendant longtemps dans leurs tentatives.
