Die vorliegende Darstellung zeigt, dass das existentielle Denken ganz im Gegenteil eine Konstante der abendlandischen Rationalitat seit der Spatantike ist. Es wirkt als Korrekturmechanismus des philosophischen Diskurses, indem es kritisch die Entsprechung menschlicher Erwartung an Philosophie und deren Methodik und Formensprache reflektiert. Im ersten Band wird die Entwicklung dieses Denkens von Augustinus bis zu Friedrich Nietzsche rekonstruiert; im zweiten Band dessen komplexe Entfaltung im 20. Jahrhundert.
