Farewell To Canada presents a unique, visual perspective on the end of an era of British Imperial history. Between 1867 and 1871, the soldier/artist William Ogle Carlile of Britain's Royal Regiment of Artillery graphically documented a time when a new country, the Dominion of Canada, faced the threat of invasion from the United States of America. At the same time, the British Army was about to leave the defence of the young nation in the hands of the Canadian Militia and a newly raised permanent force.
The paintings, drawings and cartoon sketches of Lieutenant Carlile were published in news magazines of the day and in his own book of recollections of his years in Canada. For the first time, more than thirty of Carlile's works have been collected together here and serve as witness to a time during which Canada took the first tentative steps toward complete military self-sufficiency on her long path toward greater independence from Great Britain and the British Empire.

About the Author
Seguin, Marc: - Marc Seguin brings his lifelong fascination with history together with his interest in documentary art in presenting the illustrations of the soldier/artist William Ogle Carlile (1839-1907). Marc holds a degree in History from the University of Western Ontario and is the author of several books relating to Canadian marine and military history. He lives on the shores of Lake Ontario in Prince Edward County, Canada, with his wife and two sons.Carlile, William O.: - Born in 1839, into an Anglo-Irish family, William Ogle Carlile was commissioned as an officer in the British Army in 1861. Lieutenant Carlile was posted to Canada with the 3rd Brigade, Royal Regiment of Artillery in 1867. As an accomplished artist, he illustrated many Canadian scenes and military activities leading up to the departure, in 1871, of the last Imperial garrison defending Canada. Many of Carlile's paintings, drawings and cartoon sketches were published in magazines such as the Canadian Illustrated News, L'Opinion Publique Journal Illustre and the Illustrated London News, as well as in his own book Recollections of Canada. Just before the Royal Artillery left it's last garrison at Quebec City, William married a local girl, Rachel Louisa Phillips. After retiring from the British Army in 1887 with the rank of lieutenant-colonel, William and Louisa settled at Fleet, Hampshire, England. William died there in 1907.
