Friulian is the language of my childhood, the language I spoke with my parents and brothers and friends in my hometown in the northeastern region of Italy known as Friuli. It is still my preferred language of conversation with my brothers and Friulian-speaking with friends. Whats Friulian? Maybe the best way to describe it is by imagining what England was like, say, a hundred years or so after the Normans invaded it & settled in for the long haul. In doing so they pretty much changed the cultural and linguisticic landscape of England. In pre-Norman times, the English were quite contnt to do their rough & tumble business in the old Saxon language; but with the coming of the Normans, the old Saxon was just not good enough for the conquering overlords. It needed something more to enable them to take care of their educational, religious, social and commercial needs. And so you had a situation where the ruling classes spoke a sort of Frenchified Saxon (which was to become the English of today), while the workers, the peasantsyou know, the lower sortwent on speaking Saxon. And so those rude folks kept on raising and butchering pigs and cattle for their masters; but they never ever served pig or cow steak for them. Notheir masters insisted on being treated with luscious chunks of pork or beef (boef). That, in more ways than one, has been the case in Friuli. Italian has beenand continues to bethe educational, commercial and administrative language of the region, while Friulian has traditionally been the language spoken by the common folk, mainly in the rural areas. Time was when speaking Friulan in a public, polite setting, would give away your peasant origin, and that wouldnt do. But lets not think that this sort of linguistic snobbery is a peculiarity of Italian only. Every language has its Professor Higgins & Eliza Doolittle. Friulian itself is not squeaky clean when it comes to that. My Dante itself may, by some purists, be seen as a Friulian aberration, since it does not conform to what is generally regarded as the classical Friulian, the Friulian spoken in such strongholds as Udine or San Daniele del Friuli. ......Buy Now (To Read More)
