Figure clé de l'avant-garde internationale, Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) était un extraordinaire peintre et théoricien de l'art, dont la profonde influence se ressent toujours aujourd'hui. Après avoir forgé l'expression néoplasticisme , il a développé une peinture uniquement composée des couleurs primaires ressortant sur une grille de lignes noires verticales et horizontales et un fond blanc.
Selon Mondrian, cette peinture essentielle participerait à l'avènement d'une société dans laquelle l'art n'aurait pas de place, mais participerait plutôt à la réalisation totale de la beauté . Mondrian a vécu à Amsterdam, Paris, Londres et New York, métropoles modernes qui l'ont inspiré, tout comme la musique contemporaine, et plus particulièrement le jazz. En 1917, il a participé à la fondation de De Stijl, d'abord une publication avant de devenir un cercle de professionnels se consacrant à l'art strictement géométrique des horizontales et des verticales.
