Mon Introduction au premier tome de l'uvre du chevalier Andrea de Nerciat[1] contenait la premire biographie un peu tendue du charmant crivain dijonnais, en mme temps qu'une bibliographie raisonne de ses ouvrages. Depuis la publication de ce livre, quelques documents sont venus ajouter des faits nouveaux propres clairer l'existence d'un crivain si peu connu; d'autres ont modifi mon opinion touchant certains dtails d'une vie trs mouvemente. Je les consigne tous ici, souhaitant qu'on me sache gr d'tudier cette figure smillante, frivole et un peu quivoque, ce personnage singulier et dlicieux qui semble danser un pas oubli, travers les dernires annes du dix-huitime sicle, travers toute l'Europe, travers Paris mme, au moment de la Rvolution et jusqu'au seuil du XIXe sicle qu'il ne devait pas connatre, ayant t lui-mme le reprsentant le plus caractristique de ces Franais internationaux dont la grce civilisa les deux Mondes sous les rgnes du Bien-Aim et de Louis XVI. La Note place la page 15 de ma premire Introduction et relative l'arrive du chevalier Andr-Robert Andrea de Nerciat Cassel, en 1780, tait ainsi conue: Je pense qu'Andrea de Nerciat venait de se marier.
