Architecte, designer et peintre écossais, Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) fut l'un des premiers pionniers de l'architecture moderne et du design. Bien qu'il n'ait reçu aucune reconnaissance officielle de sa ville natale de Glasgow, son mélange audacieux et nouveau de simplicité et de détails poétiques ont inspiré les modernistes de toute l'Europe.

L'approche avant-gardiste de Mackintosh embrasse une grande variété de supports ainsi que des procédés stylistiques inédits. Son oeuvre aux multiples facettes comprend architectures, mobilier, design graphique, jardins et études de fleurs. Il adopte des lignes fortes, des proportions élégantes et des motifs inspirés de la nature, associant une certaine touche de japonisme à une sensibilité toute moderniste pour la fonctionnalité de sa création. Il favorise les typographies noires et lisibles, les formes discrètes et les grandes fenêtres aux proportions généreuses apportant quantité de lumière dans les intérieurs.

À Glasgow, on compte parmi les constructions signées Mackintosh les célèbres Willow Tea Rooms, les résidences privées Windyhill et Hill House, et le Mackintosh Building de l'école d'art de Glasgow, largement reconnue comme son chef-d'oeuvre. Nombre de ses travaux ont été conçus en collaboration avec son épouse, Margaret Macdonald, artiste comme lui. À eux deux, le couple formait la moitié du collectif informel de Glasgow nommé The Four ( Les Quatre ), l'autre moitié étant constituée de la soeur de Margaret, Frances, et de son mari, Herbert MacNair.

Sur le continent, le style Glasgow rencontra un vif succès. En Italie, en Allemagne et surtout en Autriche, les artistes de la Sécession viennoise et de l'Art nouveau lui empruntèrent ses formes rectilignes et pourtant pleines de lyrisme. Dans cet ouvrage introductif, on découvre le savoir-faire de Mackintosh appliqué à l'art, l'architecture et au design pour comprendre son mélange singulier de grandiloquence et de sensualité, ainsi que son influence essentielle sur l'expression moderniste en Europe.

Fiell: - Charlotte & Peter Fiell are well known design writers, having written over sixty books on the subject. Among their various areas of specialization is the realm of transportation design in all its diverse forms. They have also lectured widely, guest taught courses, curated exhibitions, and consulted to manufacturing companies, museums, salerooms, and major private collectors around the world. Together they have written numerous TASCHEN books, including 1000 Chairs, Design of the 20th Century, Industrial Design A-Z, 1000 Lights and Scandinavian Design. They also edited TASCHEN's Decorative Art series and the 12-volume domus 1928-1999 and have most recently authored the double-volume Ultimate Collector Cars.
