Paitsi sit lheist suhdetta, joka vallitsi pojan ja vanhempien vlill ja joka niss kirjeiss ilmenee helln huolenpitona vanhempien puolelta ja koti-ikvn ja vanhempien tahdon ja toivomusten syvn kunnioituksena ja huomioonottamisena pojan puolelta, kuvaavat ne oloja ja elm ylioppilasnuorison parissa viime vuosisadan keskivaiheilla ja ennen kaikkea nuoren kirjeittenkirjoittajan lmmint isnmaallista tunnetta sek innostusta suomalaisuuden asiaan, jonka hyvksi hn jo tn varhaisena aikana oli valmis uhraamaan koko tyns ja voimansa. Jotta lukijan olisi helpompi tydent kirjeiss ilmaantuvia aukkoja ja muodostaa itselleen kuvan siit ympristst ja niist olosuhteista, joista nuorukainen oli lhtenyt, olen ottanut johdannoksi alkupuolen isni noin v. 1881 omakirjoittamasta elmkerrasta. Julkaistut kirjeet vanhemmille ja sisarelle ovat alkujaan kaikki saksankielisi. Sen sijaan kirjeet Kaarlo Slrille ovat suomeksi kirjoitetut ja painetut alkuperisess muodossaan.
