Three Northeast Arkansas siblings, Sarah, 12, Johnny, 9, and Mark, 5, come home from school one day and find their stepfather forcing their mother to move away with him to St. Louis. When the kids are placed in the home of an abusive local minister, they run away, hoping to find their mother. Soon caught, Sarah is returned to the home of the abusive preacher while her brothers are placed in a different home. When fate intervenes, and their stepfather is killed in an industrial accident, the kids are reunited with their mother. Soon, Sarah's abuse is discovered, and the preacher is tried but acquitted. Feeling guilty for helping her husband escape punishment, the minister's unstable wife resolves the problem, and Sarah rebuilds her family. Carl P. "Buster" Hitt is a cranky, single, retired old man who worked for 25 years in various positions at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He has a daughter (former member of the band Twister Alley) who teaches college, a sister and brother-in-law who retired from two major retailers' home offices, a deceased father who was a well driller, a deceased mother who was a country singer and musician, and a deceased uncle who was a regular performer on the Grand Ole Opry. Carl served four years in the United States Air Force on Okinawa, in Korea, and in Washington state. He has a BA and MA in sociology, and his hobbies include photography, documentary filmmaking, and writing. He has also met Dolly Parton four times.
