Any pattern of behavior in which one partner abuses the other physically, emotionally, psychologically, or financially is considered domestic violence.
It has many faces and affects people of all sexes, ages, and socioeconomic statuses. As a pervasive and deplorable social problem, domestic violence has devastating effects on its victims and their loved ones.
The following are examples of frequent forms of domestic violence:
- The use of physical force against or for the purpose of controlling a partner is an example of physical violence. Physical violence can take the shape of any of the following actions: hitting, slapping, punching, kicking, choking, etc.
- One form of abuse is known as "emotional or psychological abuse," and it entails exerting control over a partner's feelings and thoughts. Abusive behavior can take many forms, such as relentless criticism, insults, humiliation, threats, intimidation, isolation, and gaslighting (which causes the victim to question their own view of reality).
- When one partner pressures or intimidates another into sexual activity against their will, this is sexual abuse. Any sexual act that is not mutually agreed upon is included in this category.
- Economic or financial abuse occurs when one spouse uses their access to or use of money resources to exert dominance and control over the other. Money can be withheld, the victim's career or education might be sabotaged, and the victim can be saddled with debt.
- Abuse in the digital or cyber realm refers to the use of electronic devices for the sake of power and control or harassment of a relationship. Some examples of this kind of behavior are eavesdropping on conversations and tracking where people go online or on their phones, and cyberbullying.
- The term "stalking" refers to a set of unwelcome and intrusive actions taken with the intent to threaten, harass, or intimidate a partner. This can be done in a variety of ways, such as by following them, calling them repeatedly, or sending them unwelcome texts.
- Some abusers will try to control and manipulate their victims by appealing to their religious or spiritual beliefs.
Be aware that domestic violence can take many forms and might worsen over time. Injuries, trauma, anxiety, sadness, and low self-esteem are just some of the physical and psychological consequences that victims of domestic violence often endure.
Domestic abuse is a serious problem that requires immediate attention. Many services exist to help victims of domestic violence, such as crisis lines, shelters, and advocacy groups. Always put your own well-being and safety first.
