Hallbase en Amberes, cuando se hacian en Espaa los aprestos de un armamento considerable, destinado la colonizacion y conquista del Rio de la Plata. Jven y entusiasta, resolvi pasar Cdiz, punto de reunion de los que debian tomar parto en esta hazaa. Catorce buques de varias dimensiones, llevando bordo una fuerza de 2,500 Espaoles, y de 150 Alemanes, estaban al punto de alzar el ancla para entregarse los azares de una navegacion desconocida. Un rajo de esperanza, pintado en todos los rostros, alumbraba esta escena magnfica de actividad y heroismo. D. Pedro de Mendoza, que se habia distinguido en las guerras de Italia, peleando al lado del Condestable de Borbon, era el alma de esta empresa, en la que se alist Schmidel como soldado, sin preveer que seria su historiador. El 24 de Agosto del ao de 1534 dej la escuadra la rada de Cdiz, y pas la de San Lucar, de donde zarp el 1. de Setiembre. En pocos dias lleg las Canarias, ltimo eslabon del mundo antiguo, y colocadas como una atalaya en las vastas soledades del Ocano.
