Tsegaye Gabre-Medhin (1936-2006) was a renowned and prolific Ethiopian poet, playwright, and translator who made significant contributions to Ethiopian literature and culture. His work explored themes of social justice, Ethiopian history, and African identity, blending traditional and modern influences. Tsegaye wrote in both Amharic and English. His plays (he wrote over 30) and poems are celebrated for their powerful exploration of the human condition. Tsegaye was named Ethiopia's Poet Laureate in 1972 and remains an influential literary figure in Ethiopia's cultural history.

This biography "ምጥቀት በቅኔ አክናፍ" (Soaring on Winged Verse), traces the astonishing voyage of Tsegaye, a shepherd boy born in the small mountain town of Boda, Ethiopia during the Italian occupation. At age 13, Tsegaye had the audacity and the unexpected opportunity to write and stage a play for the late Emperor Haile Selassie and he never looked back.

Tsegaye went on to study experimental theater at the Royal Court Theater in London and the Com?die-Fran?aise in Paris. He translated the works of Shakespeare and Moli?re into Amharic, helping bridge global literature with local traditions.

His career spanned three regimes: Emperor Haile Selassie's feudal rule, Mengistu Hailemariam's Marxist dictatorship (under which he was briefly imprisoned), and the putative democracy of Meles Zenawi. All three banned his plays; he once estimated that 30 of his plays had at one time or another been censored.

He was the artistic director of the Ethiopian National Theater for ten years and founded the department of theater at Addis Ababa University, the nation's largest, where he also taught. Tsegaye considered himself a Pan Africanist. He met with leaders of the movement, such as Sedar Senghor and Julius Nyrere, and other prominent Black literary figures. (It is apt that in 2002, the African Union adopted one of his poems as its anthem.)

In Tsegaye's eventful and relatively short life (he died at 69), he experienced the push and pull of the ancient and the modern-Christianity and the belief systems of his forefathers; colonialism and the Italian invasion; fealty to the passing feudal regime and the inevitable draw towards modernization; and the ethnic, class, and political tensions negotiated within the burgeoning promise of a new day. This cauldron of change, nationally and globally, is reflected in his works.

Much has been written about Tsegaye's works and many are acquainted with his plays. ምጥቀት በቅኔ አክናፍ (Soaring on Winged Verse) provides a unique insight into Tsegaye the human being, and the historical backdrop and circumstances that forged his path.
