Avec son mouvement Pittura Metafisica, le peintre italien d'origine grecque Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978) fut une figure influente de l'avant-garde européenne dans l'entre-deux-guerres, aux côtés de maîtres comme Pablo Picasso et Paul Éluard.

La peinture métaphysique de l'artiste représente des statues ou des mannequins en personnages installés dans des espaces structurés par une perspective centrale exagérée -- places urbaines, arcades, façades distantes ou intérieurs propices à la claustrophobie. La composition théâtrale de ses oeuvres s'appuie sur des lignes nettes, des clairs-obscurs intenses, des plans géométriques et des vides qui dégagent une sensation d'angoisse et de solitude.
