Heroes Don't Have to Fly: Scooter the Word Bird

Scooter the bird has always wanted to fly around and use words to help others just like his favorite author, Wendell. The only problem is that he can't fly, so he uses a scooter. Bully bird Squawk teases him and the other birds. "Are you even a bird?" Squawk says meanly to Scooter. And Scooter knows how much words can hurt, so he takes some advice from Wendell's book and decides to stand up to Squawk and help his friends--by using positive words! One day when Scooter finds himself in a dangerous situation, to his surprise it's Squawk who offers words that help him. Knowing the power of positive words, Scooter makes a friendly offer to Squawk that hopefully will get Squawk to change his bullying ways.

Shannon Anderson is an award-winning children's book author and former elementary teacher. She loves to write and speak about ways we can make a difference through kindness and compassion. Shannon enjoys traveling to schools and libraries around the country to connect with her readers.

Olga Demidova studied traditional applied arts, graphic design, and animation. She worked several years at animation productions and after that found her passion for illustrating children's books. Since 2010, she has worked with many publishers around the world. She always tries to stay positive and see the happy little things in everyday life. She believes that childhood is a very important period in every person's life, and she sees her work as helping to creating a safe and kind world for a child to grow up in.
