Out of the ashes and rubble of the Watts Rising in South Central Los Angeles in the mid-1960s arose a project called Operation Bootstrap that provided training and education for community members. Its motto, "Learn, Baby, Learn," sparked the development of the Shindana Toy Factory, the first Black toy company in the US, dedicated to producing dolls and games that would build pride and spark the imagination of children who rarely saw themselves in the toys available at the time.

About the Author
Watson Sherman, Charlotte: - Charlotte Watson Sherman loves to read, write and play under the Southern California sun. She is a former librarian and the author of Brown Sugar Babe, Mermaid Kenzie: Protector of the Deeps, and co-author of This Opening Sky.Stimphat, Esther: - "Based in White Plains, Esther Stimphat is one of the rising stars of the New York illustration field, bringing the color and vivacity of her Haitian background to a powerful, realistic and impactful body of work. Esther's art is larger than life - literally! - as she also renders inspiring indoor and outdoor murals for her clients. Inspired by nature in all its magnificence, as well as great poster artists like Drew Struzan and George Stavrinos, Esther paints both traditionally and digitally. Esther's portfolio ranges from murals through books, online and advertising illustration, as well as graphic novels. She has an Associate of Applied Science degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and enjoys sharing her gift by teaching art as well. Colors, details and story telling are the driving forces of her illustrations and paintings, but "relatability is the best reward", she says."
