Au tournant du XXe siècle, le photographe américain Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868-1952) se lance dans le projet qui l'occupera pendant trente ans, pour composer une étude magistrale sur les Indiens d'Amérique du Nord. Son approche ambitieuse, tant d'un point de vue artistique que scientifique, lui a permis de recenser en mots et en images les traces du mode de vie traditionnel des Indiens, déjà en voie de disparition.

Se dévouant entièrement à cette entreprise, Curtis est parti à la rencontre de 80 tribus amérindiennes, de la frontière du Mexique au détroit de Behring, gagnant leur confiance grâce à sa patience et sa sensibilité. Son oeuvre a été publiée en 20 volumes entre 1907 et 1930 sous le titre de The North American Indian, mais le tirage étant limité à 272 exemplaires, les originaux sont vite devenus très rares.

Ce livre rassemble l'intégralité du portfolio amérindien de Curtis en une seule publication, offrant ainsi à nouveau accès à cette extraordinaire entreprise, précieux document historique et triomphe de la forme photographique.

Curtis, Edward S.: - For over thirty years, photographer Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868-1952) traveled the length and breadth of North America, seeking to record in words and images the traditional life of its vanishing indigenous inhabitants. Like a man possessed, he strove to realize his life's work, which culminated in the publication of his encyclopedia The North American Indian. In the end, this monumental work comprised twenty textual volumes and twenty portfolios with over 2000 illustrations.
