Stephen Arthur Stills, born on January 3rd, 1945, Dallas, Texas, US, is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer & political activist, best known for his part in Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. As both a solo act and member of two successful groups, he's sold over 35 million L.Ps., being ranked # 28 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time during 2003 then # 47 in their list of 2011. He became the first artist to be inducted twice on the same night into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Neil Young having stated, "Stephen is a genius". Starting his professional career with Buffalo Springfield, Stills composed For What It's Worth, which became one of the most iconic songs of the '60s, other memorable songs that he contributed to the band being 'Sit Down, I Think I Love You', Bluebird, and Rock & Roll Woman. His bandmate Richie Furay stated that Stephen was "the heart and soul of Buffalo Springfield". After Buffalo Springfield folded, he began working with David Crosby and Graham Nash as a trio called Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN). As well as writing many of the group's songs, Stephen played bass, guitar, and keyboards on their debut album, which sold over 4 million copies, more than anything from the 3 members' previous bands: the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and the Hollies. The L.P. won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist. His eponymous 1st solo album, Stephen Stills, went gold being the only one to feature both Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. Its single Love the One You're With became his biggest solo hit, making # 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. Stills followed up with a string of solo L.Ps, as well as starting a group with Chris Hillman named Manassas in 1972. Neil Young reunited with CSN during the summer 1974 after a 4-year hiatus, for a concert tour that was recorded then released in 2014 as CSNY 1974. It was one of the first stadium tours, being the largest tour the band has been on. CSN reunited during 1977 for their album CSN, which became the trio's best-selling record, CSN and CSNY having continued to produce platinum L.Ps through the '80s.
