There Is More in Us Than We Know: A Book of Readings

Readings have a long history at EL Education, rooted deeply in the organization's heritage with Outward Bound and its founder, Kurt Hahn. The readings in this book are a powerful source of inspiration and reflection, curated specifically with educators and students in mind.

What makes a book of readings such a powerful tool for educators?

As Scott Hartl states in the Preface, readings "serve as a bridge between our unique personal experiences and the accumulated wisdom of our shared experience." In the Introduction, Cyndi Gueswel echoes his words: "A well-chosen reading serves as a brief, yet powerful offering that provides a group with a touchstone, an inspiration, a provocation. Over time, readings become like a series of tiny webs that bind groups across time and space. Imagine each reading as a fine thread catching dew and light, stitching us together as we read them again and again, with fresh eyes each time."

The readings in this book fall into the following categories:

  • Challenge
  • Character
  • Craftsmanship
  • Crew
  • Engagement
  • Equity and Social Justice
  • Leadership
  • Nature and Adventure
  • Service and Contribution
  • Teaching and Learning

About the Author
El Education: - EL Education is a leading national K-12 nonprofit helping to build great schools in diverse communities across America. For over 25 years, EL Education has been bringing to life an expanded vision of student achievement that includes mastery of knowledge and skills, character, and high-quality student work. EL Education promotes active classrooms: alive with discovery, problem-solving, challenge, and collaboration. EL Education drives results: teachers fulfill their highest aspirations and students achieve more than they think possible. EL Education students have both the capacity and the passion to build to a better, more just world. EL Education's expert educators work with schools (both district and charter) across 35 states, serving over 200,000 students and 16,000 teachers in our school network and multi-year literacy partnerships. Rigorous impact studies by Mathematica Policy Research demonstrate that EL Education's approach works: teachers significantly improve their craft and students achieve more, regardless of background. Grounded in decades of in-depth work with educators, EL Education creates highly respected, widely distributed open educational resources, including the following: the world's largest collection of exemplary student projects; an acclaimed literacy curriculum that has been downloaded 8.7 million times and received the highest possible ratings from EdReports; inspiring instructional videos with over 1.3 million views; hundreds of free online resources; and best-selling education books. EL Education was founded in 1992 by the Harvard Graduate School of Education in collaboration with Outward Bound USA, based on the belief that learning and achievement flourish when teachers and students are engaged in work that is challenging, adventurous, and meaningful.
